Officials from the National Crime Agency (NCA) boarded on the vessel – named Sy Atrevido – near Fishguard on Tuesday, August 28. It is believed the boat was returning to the UK from South America before it was intercepted by The Border Force’s HMC Protector. NCA staff found 250kg of the Class-A drug onboard although investigators believe that figure could rise to 750kg once the search has been finished. Two men, aged 53 and 41, were arrested on the yacht and remain in police custody. Four others, three men aged 23, 31 and 47 and a woman aged 30 were also arrested in Liverpool and Loughborough as part of the operation but later released on bail. Craig Naylor, NCA Deputy Director of Investigations, said he believed the raid was the second-biggest in recent history. He added: “We believe at the moment what we’ve taken off the boat has a wholesale value of £8m and the street value of that will be in excess of £20m. “That’s likely to rise as we take more product off the boat so as an estimate the wholesale value would be £20n in total and a street value of £60m. “This is a very high-end job – 750kg of cocaine. You don’t come across that every day of the week. “The NCA, working with Border Force, working with other partners, are regularly seizing, arresting, and convicting people for these sort of offences but usually for 10kg-20kg amounts. “Certainly in my recollection this is the second-biggest seizure that the NCA has had in recent years.” Deputy Director Steve Whitton, from Border Force’s maritime command, said: “This is a major seizure and a testament to the multi-agency approach we take to secure the UK’s border and territorial waters.” The UK’s biggest-ever drugs bust was made in April 2016. Mumin Sahin, 47, and Emin Ozmen, 50, from Turkey, were caught off the coast of Aberdeenshire with 3.2 tonnes of high purity cocaine. The drugs had an estimated street value of £512m.
