Young dealers caught selling drugs are being offered free driving lessons, fitness sessions and career training by police. The Call-In scheme has been rolled out across Bristol in an attempt to end the “revolving door” of offending. Offenders will receive the opportunities instead of a court appearance. However, those suspected of crimes while on the six to nine-month scheme will be charged, the BBC reports. Det Supt Gary Haskins said most of those involved will only have “dabbled” in dealing. Participants must be aged between 16 and 21 will be chosen by a panel. They cannot have any previous convictions for sexual or violent offences. The first round of programmes will begin in February and up to 16 people will take part. Sessions offered include non-contact boxing and a course with Street2Boardroom, which wants youngsters to apply street “hustle” to legitimate business. Haskins said it has also helped people to get paperwork and qualifications for the construction industry, driving and English lessons. Stuart Pattison, crime reduction manager at Bristol council, said: "We know when they are entrenched like this it is very challenging to get them away from the gangs. "The pilot will start with a small group and we will evaluate their outcomes properly but we are confident this, and our overall strategic approach, can have a significant impact." Former drug dealer Clinton Wilson, AKA King Aggi, has come out in support of the scene. The 43-year-old once led the Bristol Aggi Crew but now works for Street2Boardroom. He said: "When I see them making silly mistakes obviously I want to tell them if you carry on doing that, this is where you're going to go. "They just went down the wrong thing for a minute and it all went wrong," he said. "But once they've been to jail, they ain't getting them same opportunities when they come out again." The Taxpayers’ Alliance’s Research Director Duncan Simpson told Daily Star Online: "If this scheme means fewer drugs on the streets, then it could well work. But Avon and Somerset police need to be careful. "This scheme might well be open to abuse. It has to be delivered in a way that makes sure drug dealers don't take advantage of these freebies. "If we really want to save taxpayers' cash, we need to decriminalise low-level drug possession and stop sending kids to prison."
